Dimming to Achieve Optimal Lighting

Back to Knowledge Hub

If there is one single upgrade that transforms a lighting installation from merely functional to genuinely excellent, it is dimming. The ability to adjust light levels — whether manually through wall controls or automatically through a programmed control system — gives a space a quality of adaptability that static, full-brightness lighting simply cannot match.

Yet dimming is also one of the most misunderstood aspects of lighting specification. Choosing the wrong dimming protocol, or pairing a dimmer with an incompatible LED driver, results in flicker, buzz, limited dimming range, and frustrated clients.

Understanding Dimming Protocols

Phase-cut dimming (leading or trailing edge) is the most common residential dimming method. It works by chopping the AC power waveform to reduce the average power delivered to the lamp. Modern trailing-edge dimmers are the standard choice for LED loads — they produce less interference and are gentler on electronic drivers than leading-edge (TRIAC) variants. For residential projects, this is almost always the right specification.

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is the gold standard for commercial and hospitality applications. Each DALI-addressed fixture can be individually controlled, grouped, and scene-programmed from a central controller. DALI's 0–100% dimming range (down to 0.1% in some drivers) and its diagnostic feedback make it the protocol of choice for hotel guest rooms, function spaces, and retail environments where maximum flexibility is required.

0–10V dimming is a simpler analogue protocol commonly used in commercial LED fixtures. It is reliable and cost-effective for applications that don't require the full addressability of DALI.

The Art of Dimming in Hospitality

In a hotel guest room, dimming isn't just a convenience — it's a fundamental part of the guest experience. Scene-based control systems allow guests to select "Evening Relaxation," "Reading," or "Full Bright" with a single button press, with the lighting system recalling pre-programmed levels for every circuit in the room. This kind of control, seamlessly implemented, is what separates a five-star lighting experience from an average one.

From a specification standpoint, the key is ensuring that LED drivers are dimmer-compatible and tested with the selected control system. Never assume compatibility — always verify, and always commission the dimming system properly before handover.
