IP & IK Ratings: What It Means for Your Lights

Back to Knowledge Hub

When specifying lighting for outdoor spaces, bathrooms, kitchens, or any environment subject to moisture, dust, or physical abuse, the IP (Ingress Protection) and IK (Impact Protection) ratings of a luminaire are not optional reading — they are fundamental specification criteria. Getting these wrong means fixtures that fail prematurely, warranties that are voided, and potentially dangerous electrical installations.

Understanding IP Ratings

An IP rating consists of two digits. The first digit (0–6) describes protection against solid particle ingress, from no protection (0) to complete dust exclusion (6). The second digit (0–9K) describes protection against liquid ingress, from no protection (0) to protection against sustained high-pressure water jets (9K) and, at IP68, continuous immersion to specified depths.

For Philippine outdoor environments, the minimum practical specification for most exterior luminaires is IP65 — fully dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. This handles tropical rain, hose-down cleaning, and general outdoor exposure effectively. Fixtures near swimming pools or in splash zones should be IP66 or IP67. Luminaires intended for underwater installation (in pools, water features, or ponds) must be rated IP68 to the required submersion depth.

Interior wet areas such as bathrooms and commercial kitchens typically require IP44 (splash-protected) as a minimum, with IP65 preferred for direct shower or hose-down zones.

Understanding IK Ratings

Where IP describes protection against environmental ingress, IK describes resistance to mechanical impact — measured in joules of energy. IK ratings run from IK00 (no protection) to IK10 (5 joules, equivalent to a 5kg mass dropped from 20cm). For public spaces, car parks, sports facilities, and any environment where fixtures may be subject to vandalism or accidental contact, IK08 or IK10 is the minimum sensible specification.

Impact ratings are particularly relevant for wall-mounted fixtures at low heights and outdoor luminaires in areas with pedestrian traffic. A fixture that meets all photometric and electrical requirements but shatters on first contact is not fit for purpose.

Practical Guidance

Always check both the luminaire body and the driver (if external) when assessing IP suitability. A high-IP fitting with an IP20-rated external driver mounted in an exposed location is a specification error. When in doubt, choose a higher rating — the incremental cost is minimal compared to the cost of premature replacement.
