3 Most Common Retail Lighting Mistakes

Back to Knowledge Hub

Walk into any struggling retail store and there's a good chance the lighting is part of the problem. Lighting is the single most powerful tool a retailer has to attract attention, make products look desirable, and guide customers through a space — yet it's consistently underinvested in, poorly specified, or simply wrong. Here are the three most common retail lighting mistakes we see in Philippine commercial spaces.

Mistake 1: Flat, Uniform Illuminance Everywhere

Many retailers instruct their designers to simply "make it bright" — and the result is a flat, evenly-lit space that treats every square metre identically. This is the opposite of what retail lighting should do. The visual interest in a retail environment is created by contrast — pools of brighter, warmer light on merchandise surrounded by slightly dimmer ambient light that pushes the eye toward the product.

The fix is a layered lighting strategy: ambient lighting for overall visibility, accent lighting (typically track-mounted spotlights or recessed adjustable downlights) focused directly on displays and feature shelves, and decorative elements that reinforce brand identity. The accent-to-ambient ratio in a well-designed retail space is typically 5:1 or higher.

Mistake 2: Ignoring Colour Rendering Index (CRI)

Low-CRI lighting makes merchandise look dull, colours appear muted, and food look unappetising. A CRI of 80 — common in budget retail fittings — is simply not good enough for any environment where the appearance of the product drives the sale. Fashion retailers should specify CRI 93+. Food and beverage operators should use CRI 95+ to ensure produce, pastries, and plated dishes look their absolute best.

High-CRI LEDs cost slightly more per fixture but the return in conversion rate and brand perception far exceeds the incremental investment.

Mistake 3: Neglecting the Perimeter

Human vision is naturally drawn to bright edges. A retail space that illuminates only the floor area and centre fixtures while leaving perimeter walls and shelves in relative shadow will cause customers to unconsciously congregate in the centre and miss the full range of merchandise. Wall washing and perimeter accent lighting are essential to draw customers to the edges — where, in most retail layouts, the highest-margin products live.

Great retail lighting is not expensive to achieve. It requires thoughtful specification, the right fixture types, and commissioning by someone who understands the commercial objectives. If your store's lighting isn't working for you, Lumitron's team can assess your space and propose a solution.
