LED Technology
Colour Rendering Index — most commonly abbreviated as CRI or Ra — measures how accurately a light source renders the colours of objects it illuminates, compared to a reference light source (typically daylight or incandescent). It's scored on a scale of 0 to 100, where 100 represents perfect colour accuracy. And while it's often overlooked in budget lighting specifications, CRI has a profound effect on how spaces feel and how products and people appear within them.
Perhaps the most commercially compelling reason to specify high CRI lighting is its effect on what your customers see. In a restaurant, fresh produce under 80 CRI LED lighting appears dull and desaturated — the vivid red of a tomato, the deep green of fresh herbs, the golden crust of a perfectly baked bread: all are diminished. Upgrade to CRI 95+ and the same food looks immediately more vibrant and appetising.
The same principle applies in fashion retail. Under high CRI light, fabric colours appear as the designer intended and as the product photography shows. Under low CRI light, subtle colour differences between shades are lost, creating a muted, flat visual experience that undermines the merchandising effort.
Human skin tones are complex, with warm undertones in many Filipino skin types that are beautifully rendered by high CRI warm white light. Under low-CRI cool white LEDs, skin can appear sallow or grey, flattering no one. In hospitality environments — hotels, restaurants, spas, event spaces — guests spend time looking at each other and seeing themselves. High CRI warm lighting flatters everyone and creates the impression that the space genuinely cares about its guests' experience.
Architects, interior designers, and developers who work at the upper end of the market have learned to recognise the difference that high CRI lighting makes to their finished projects. A beautifully detailed interior that is lit with 80 CRI lamps will never quite look as good in person as it does in the render — because the render assumes perfect colour rendering. Specifying CRI 90+ is a simple way to ensure the finished space matches — or exceeds — the vision.
The incremental cost of high CRI LED over standard-CRI variants has decreased significantly as the technology has matured. For most project types, the decision is straightforward: specify at least CRI 90, and CRI 95+ wherever visual quality is a commercial priority.
